2. Overview of the program, training duration, and degree awarded

2.1. Program overview

The Mechanical Engineering program is offered by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. This is one of the newer majors/specializations at Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, first admitting students in 2019.

The curriculum is developed following the CDIO approach (Conceive – Design – Implement – Operate) and is evaluated in accordance with ABET accreditation standards (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, USA).

Mechanical Engineering is an engineering discipline that applies principles of physics, mathematics, engineering, and materials science to design, analyze, manufacture, and operate machinery and mechanical systems. It is one of the oldest and broadest engineering disciplines worldwide.

Mechanical Engineering includes core areas such as mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics, materials science, mechatronics, and electromechanical engineering. In addition, it also utilizes tools such as computer-aided design and product lifecycle management to design and analyze manufacturing systems, industrial equipment and machinery, thermal and refrigeration systems, transportation systems, aircraft, ships, robots, medical devices, weapons, and many other applications.

By enrolling in the Mechanical Engineering program, you will:

  • Fulfill your childhood dream of creating machines and equipment as you wish, because the Mechanical Engineering program at the Faculty provides you with a full pathway to turn ideas into reality—from concept development, design, material selection, engineering calculations to meet standards, selection of appropriate control systems, drawing creation, manufacturing process planning, to hands-on machining and product fabrication.

  • Gain additional knowledge and skills in management and operation of machinery and equipment, including mechanical–electrical and mechatronic systems, as well as communication and teamwork skills.

2.2. Training duration and degree awarded

  • Bachelor’s degree: 4 years

  • Engineer’s degree (equivalent to Master’s level): 5–5.5 years

3. Knowledge and skills acquired after graduation

After graduation, students are expected to acquire the following professional knowledge and skills:

  • Professional knowledge: fundamental knowledge of Mechanical Engineering in general, along with additional skills in applying computer tools for engineering calculations, machine element design, machinery, and equipment design.

  • Soft skills: communication, presentation, and teamwork skills.

4. Scholarship opportunities and academic support

  • Opportunities to receive scholarships from the University, Faculty, and sponsors.

  • Opportunities to join student teams in national competitions such as Mechanics Olympiad, Robocon, etc.

  • Practice in laboratories and workshops that meet national standards.

  • Transform personal ideas into student scientific research projects.

  • Participate in the Faculty and University volunteer teams.

  • Participate in cultural and sports teams (competing both inside and outside the University).

  • Field trips and internships at companies and corporations.

  • Opportunities to pursue specialized study and research in various majors within and beyond the Faculty.

  • Opportunities to obtain scholarships for higher-level education in Vietnam and abroad.

5. Career opportunities

After graduating from the Mechanical Engineering program at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, you may work as:

  • Mechanical design engineers; professionals in manufacturing, operation, consulting, or business roles in companies related to mechanical engineering, electromechanical engineering, and mechatronics.

  • Personnel responsible for managing and operating equipment and construction machinery in construction enterprises.

  • Personnel managing and operating technological production lines in factories and industrial plants.

  • Inspectors in inspection and certification companies.

  • Lecturers or researchers developing machinery, production lines, or mechanical systems at institutes, universities, or companies.

  • Work overseas (Japan, Taiwan, etc.).

  • Other related positions.

6. Postgraduate study opportunities

With internationally-oriented training programs, graduates can easily pursue postgraduate education in various locations such as:

  • Faculty of Mechanical Engineering – Hanoi University of Civil Engineering.

  • Other majors/specializations at Hanoi University of Civil Engineering.

  • Other technical universities in Vietnam.

  • Overseas (through recommendations from the Faculty/University or self-application).
